Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau is set to hold an conference this afternoon as Canadian media reports that he could resign in a number of days - bringing an end to his nine-year tenure. The reasons for Mr Trudeau’s rumoured resignation remain unknown, however it is believed that after his party – the Liberal party – performed poorly in a number of recent opinion polls, members have pressured the 53-year-old to stand down.

But who is Mr Trudeau – the 25th Canadian prime minister who has led the country for almost a decade? Keep reading to learn more about him, his personal life and his political career. Justin Trudeau was born on Christmas Day in Ottawa in 1971, and was raised speaking both French and English. With two brothers, he is the eldest son of the late Pierre Trudeau, who served as the country’s 15th prime minister, from 1968 to 1979 and 1980 to 1984.
His father’s time in office was famous for a number of reasons – including when he defeated the French separatist movement, and when he formed a new Canadian constitution in 1982. Mr Trudeau marks the first time a child of a prime minister has taken office in the country.
Mr Trudeau studied literature at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1994. After this he completed the University of British Columbia’s education programme and spent several years teaching, mostly French and maths, in Vancouver.
In 2005, Mr Trudeau married his childhood friend Sophie Grégoire. The Montreal-born daughter of a stockbroker and a nurse, Sophie Grégoire first met her husband-to-be back in the pair’s schooldays, when she was in his brother Michel’s class at school.
