TV ratings wars are always hotly contested – and now even Jacob Rees-Mogg is feeling the heat after an apparent on-screen gaffe. The former Tory Cabinet minister, who joined GB News last year, has had his screen time slashed in half after he reportedly angered bosses at the channel.

They were ‘furious’ after Sir Jacob was shown watching BBC News – rather than GB News – on his Discovery+ reality show Meet The Rees-Moggs. The offending scene is also shown on the trailer for the five-part series featuring the politician and his family. According to GB News insiders, it was a contributing factor behind the decision to halve his contract, thought to be worth around £300,000 per year.

Channel bosses announced that Sir Jacob will now present his State of the Nation show on Mondays and Tuesdays, with his Wednesday and Thursday slots going to Matthew Goodwin. ‘The bosses were livid,’ said a source. ‘Lots of people are watching Jacob’s reality show and it would have been the perfect opportunity to give GB News a bit of great publicity.

‘You would have also thought Jacob would have wanted to show the channel off. What’s more, it shows he watches the BBC and not GB News, his own employer.’. The source added: ‘It didn’t exactly go down very well. While money is also an issue – costs always need to be kept down – this did not help him at all. It’s the talk of GB News.’.
