Jaap Stam has backed Manchester United to make a transfer move for Bayern Munich speedster Alphonso Davies. New United boss Ruben Amorim has quickly implemented his favoured 3-4-3 formation that relies heavily on the attacking threat offered by wing-backs.

Noussair Mazraoui, a summer signing from Bayern, has impressed in patches so far this season, but Diogo Dalot has struggled with the demands of his new role. United stalwart Luke Shaw, meanwhile, remains sidelined through injury and it remains to be seen whether or not he is capable of adapting to a new position.

Davies is out of contract at the end of the season and although he has appeared destined for Real Madrid, United are said to have registered concrete interest and Stam believes he would represent a perfect signing for Amorim. ‘Alphonso Davies is exactly the type of player that Manchester United should be looking at, players that would bring in a lot of quality and that should be the case in every window,’Stam told Sport Lens.

‘You have to ask if a player is going to make it a better team and Davies is so fast, so good on the ball and is versatile. These types of players will make a difference and he’s also got the experience of playing at the highest level. Sorry, the video was not found.

‘Without a doubt he would improve United when you assess the squad and the players that are already there. ‘Thinking about what Sir Alex would do, he would make harsh decisions if his players weren’t up to the right standard or picked up so many injuries. Especially when you look at a position like wing-back and the role they play.
