Madonna has been defended by her fans after sparking a backlash with a political statement. The 66-year-old pop icon is no stranger to speaking her mind - and has rubbed some fans the wrong way over the years after sharing her views on politics and American policy. And this week she found herself under attack online when she took a stand to support members of the LGBTQ+ community. Earlier this month, Donald Trump returned to the White House to begin a new term as President of the US after winning the 2024 election campaign. Since returning to power on 20 January, he has issued a string of executive orders with far reaching consequences - changing rules on issues from immigration to federal funding.

He has also mandated that only two genders will be recognised in the USA - bringing concern and anxiety to those who do not conform as male or female. In a social media post on Wednesday, the Material Girl singer made her thoughts clear as she sided with those in the LGBTQ+ community. Sharing a photo of herself wearing a black, fluffy coat, Madonna wrote on X: "It’s so sad to watch our new Government slowly dismantling all the Freedoms we have been fighting for and WON over the years. Don’t give up the Fight!".

She later shared an image of herself from her youth, writing: "Here I am, a young woman filled with a sense of purpose, and many dreams. It was my first year of living in New York, a dangerous place, promising me everything and nothing. I had no idea that I would one day be living here in a time where Fascism would become Banal and the. Norm.". Her comments opened her up to criticism - with many lashing out at the singer for standing up for equality. But others rushed to Madonna's aid to share their support and gratitude for the campaigning that she has presided over in the past.

One fan wrote on X: "Anyone critiquing this clearly doesn't know Madonna. She's been an activist since the beginning of her career and pushed social and political boundaries through artistic expression. One day we as a society will appreciate her when she's no longer w/ us. We love you, Queen!". Another typed: "You’ve spent decades using your platform to give a voice to those who didn’t have one. You’ve single-handedly made life a better experience for so many. I can imagine you’re feeling heartbroken." And many others also confronted those that sent abuse messages towards the Like A Prayer singer.

Last weekend, Madonna surprised fans when she arrived at the Comedy Cellar in New York - and took to the stage to try her hand at stand up comedy. She followed on from friend and comedian Amy Schumer with a half-hour routine that encouraged chuckles from the live audience - and she also took the opportunity to slam Trump's actions since he returned to office. A source told The Sun: "She was brought to the club by Amy. She did a full 30-minute set. She did well enough, but the audience was so stunned it was Madonna that it took them the entire set to warm up to her.

"She didn't do as well as you'd think she would, she got laughs every time she dropped F-bomb, because just hearing Madonna curse is funny. She also nailed a joke about how with all of these Trump deportations she's not going to have any staff left, which got some laughs, but really everyone was just so shocked she was there.".
