Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is observed the day before Ash Wednesday, which signifies the beginning of Lent in Christian tradition. The big day is exactly a month away with Shrove Tuesday falling on March 4 in 2025. Pancakes are a simple and delicious way to commemorate the day, whether you prefer them sweet or savoury - just it's high time to swot up on the best possible recipe. However, with a plethora of recipes available, it can be challenging to find the most reliable ones for optimal results. Fortunately, Mary Berry has revealed her secret to scrumptious pancakes using just three ingredients, reports the Express.
The former host of The Great British Bake Off uses the traditional mix of flour, eggs, and milk, but she includes an additional ingredient to make them irresistible. These pancakes are quick to prepare in just five minutes, but the batter needs to rest for half an hour to achieve the best consistency. When it comes to cooking, it only takes 10 to 12 minutes to quickly fry each spoonful of batter. Begin by sifting the flour into a bowl and creating a well in the centre. In a jug, whisk one whole egg, then separate the yolk from the white of the second egg before adding the yolk and a splash of milk to the jug.
Pour this mixture into the well and whisk it into the flour, gradually adding half of the remaining milk. Cover and let it stand for half an hour. Start by brushing a non-stick frying pan with a bit of oil, then pour two or three tablespoons of batter into the pan and tilt it so that the batter evenly covers the bottom. Next, cook the pancake over medium-high heat for 45-60 seconds until small holes appear on the surface, the base is lightly browned and the edge begins to curl. Gently loosen the pancake and flip it over using a palette knife, then let it cook on the other side for about 30 seconds until it turns golden.
