Sven-Goran Eriksson's heartbroken family are planning to sell off his treasured football trophies to help pay off his huge debts. The Swedish soccer manager died last year aged 76 from cancer. But yesterday it was revealed that he left his partner Yaniseth Alcides and two grown up children Lina and Johan with £8.6million in debts. It means that they will get nothing from his estate. Now it has been revealed that the family plan to stage a special auction to help raise much needed funds.
Over the years Sven kept many trophies and medals and caps from his time as a player in Sweden and also as manager to teams including England, Lazio, Roma, Mexico as well as Manchester City and Leicester City. The rare memorabilia will now go to a special auction for football fans and collectors to bid on.
Last night his lawyer Anders Runebjer told the Mirror about the sad decision that the family had made. He said: "They have a lot of memorabilia that will be sold at an auction. There are a lot of items that they kept. It will be announced and the auction will be internet based.".
The former England manager owed a total of £8.64 million (118 million Swedish Krona), and had assets of £4.8m, leaving his estate with a hefty deficit. The largest single share in the new figures was tax debts in the UK, totalling £7.25 million. Mr Runebjer had insisted on Tuesday that the news was "no surprise" to his family who have already put his beloved home up for sale. He said: "It is no surprise at all for those involved. It was expected. Svennis even said that 'I will not leave any money behind me'. And that was the case. It is the debt to the English tax authorities that is the background to the large total of debts. If it were not for that then there would have been no danger.".
