Neighbours boss breaks silence on iconic show’s axe – and still has hope

It’s not easy being a Neighbours fan – just two years after it was saved from the axe, it has been cancelled again. The beloved and iconic show was saved by Amazon but we have only enjoyed the relief for a very short time as it will once more come to an end.

Now, the show’s boss, Jason Herbison, who has overseen the show in both its formats over many years, still has hope that it can have a future. The producer said to fans: ‘Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced Neighbours for four decades and we are very proud of the huge success over the last two years including often appearing as one of the top 10 titles in the UK and the show’s first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series in 2024.

In fact, the show’s own account on X refused to use any terminology like ‘ending’, ‘axed’ or ‘cancelled’ – instead opting for ‘rested’. ‘We are sad to announce that Neighbours will be resting from December 2025,’ they penned. ‘New episodes from the 40th anniversary season will continue to air on Prime Video and Ten four times a week until the end of the year, with all the big soapie twists and turns that our viewers love.’.

While these messages scream hope and veiled enthusiasm for the future, there is no indication that anywhere is in talks to look at the show – though it is extremely early days so this is expected. Whether or not Neighbours is picked up again remains to be seen, with some fans sharing their love and enthusiasm for another comeback on social media, while others have stated sentiments like, ‘just let it go.’.

A spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said: ‘Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years, spanning over 400 episodes.’.

A resurgence has happened before and so a third time lucky can’t be ruled out but, for now, the use of ‘resting’ can’t be considered as any kind of confirmation of that.
