Neil Gaiman faces civil lawsuit for sexual assault

Neil Gaiman is now facing a civil lawsuit from a woman who has accused the author of sexual assault. Neil, 64, and his wife, Amanda Palmer, 48, are facing civil lawsuits -filed in Wisconsin, Massachusetts and New York – which accuse the Good Omens author of sexually assaulting her. The lawsuits allege that the woman was homeless and aged 22 when she met Palmer in New Zealand, began working for the couple and the assaults began.

According to the lawsuits, Palmer told the woman that there were complaints from more than 12 different women. It was also alleged that the couple violated laws on federal human trafficking, with complaints of assault, battery and inflicting emotional distress against Gaiman and negligence against Palmer. She is seeking at least seven million dollars (£5.6 million) in damages. The author first faced allegations of sexual misconduct in July 2024.

Two incidents were initially reported as part of an investigation by Tortoise, which was partly led by Rachel Johnson, the sister of Boris Johnson. Gaiman denied any allegations of abuse and insisted the relationships were consensual. In January, new allegations emerged and he was accused of assault by eight different women who were featured in a New York Magazine article. One of the women, Gaiman’s former nanny Scarlett Pavlovich, claimed she was assaulted in the presence of Gaiman’s five-year-old son.

She also alleged she was sexually assaulted in a bathtub, called his ‘slave’ multiple times, and he ejaculated on her face despite her saying ‘no’. In other incidents, Pavlovich alleged she was forced to consume vomit and urine. Gaiman issued a statement referring to all the multiple allegations on January 14, denying the claims. The post read: ‘I’ve stayed quiet until now, both out of respect for the people who were sharing their stories and out of a desire not to draw even more attention to a lot of misinformation.

‘I’ve always tried to be a private person, and felt increasingly that social media was the wrong place to talk about important personal matters. I’ve now reached the point where I feel that I should say something. ‘As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognise and moments I don’t, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen.

‘I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.’. He went on to add he would be ‘doing my very best to deserve their trust, as well as the trust of my readers’ and would ‘take responsibility for any missteps I made’. Since the release of the magazine article, The Sandman, the Netflix TV series adapted from Gaiman’s book has been cancelled after two seasons.

Additionally, publisher Dark Horse Comics has cancelled upcoming work by Gaiman and a UK stage adaptation of his book Coraline has been scrapped.
