Given the Western diet's reputation for being less than ideal health-wise, it may come as no surprise that rodents feasting on more Mediterranean food reaped additional perks from four strains of good gut bacteria.

Scientists specifically compared the impact of a so-called Mediterranean diet - rich in fibre, olive oil and fish - against the types of food Brits and Americans might eat every day.

"While these findings are based on animal models, they echo human studies linking the Mediterranean diet to improved memory and reduced dementia risk.
