The UK saw its broadband usage surge to record highs in 2024 as the nation leaned more on the need for speed in internet connectivity, a new report reveals. Openreach said its full fibre network is now reaching 78,000 additional homes every week. Last year Openreach said it extended its reach by over 4 million premises, taking the total to 17 million who now have access to the technology.

Notably, this expansion brings the perks of high-speed internet to Britain’s remote corners, such asthe Isles of Unst in Shetland and the Isles of Scilly. Clive Selley, chief executive of Openreach said: "Fast, reliable connectivity is essential for the UK, and the increased traffic on our broadband network is evidence that customers are increasingly reliant on it in their daily lives. We’re building and connecting people faster than ever before.".

Openreach is heading towards its target of 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026, already setting their next milestone at 30 million properties by 2030. Despite over a third of households making the switch, Mr Selley believes there's abundant potential for more upgrades.
