A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Plymouth, police have said. Paul Anthony Butler, 53, who had been wanted in connection with the death of a woman in Plymouth on Wednesday, was arrested on suspicion of murder, according to Devon and Cornwall Police. He remains in police custody.

Butler was arrested after police were alerted on Wednesday night to reports of a seriously injured woman on West Hoe Road. Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the woman, in her 40s, to hospital. Despite their best efforts, she was later pronounced dead. Supt. A formal identification of the woman is still taking place. Supt Tom Cunningham said a murder investigation was underway.

He added in a previous statement: "We appreciate that the public may find this incident concerning, but we can assure people that we have a large police presence all across the city, focused on locating and arresting the suspect. We can confirm that the incident is not being treated as terrorist-related. We will provide further updates when we are able.".

His confirmation that terrorism was not a factor comes after rumours spread on social media about the nature of the incident, PLymouthLive reported. Police said following the launching of the investigation that cordons would likely remain in place for the rest of the day and units would remain in the area.

A Devon and Cornwall spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with her family at this time who we are continuing to support. Officers would like to thank the local community for their assistance and their patience while our enquiries continue into this incident.".
