A plant expert has shared the secrets to keeping poinsettias healthy and vibrant year after year. These striking red plants are a beloved Christmas staple, bringing extra cheer to homes throughout the festive season. However, to maintain their beauty, poinsettias require proper care.
Elise Harlock, from Prestige Flowers, said: “Poinsettias are sensitive plants that need a consistent care routine to keep their bright red leaves from shedding prematurely, before the Christmas decorations come down. “Temperature fluctuations can be harmful to most plants, so avoid placing poinsettias near artificial heat sources like radiators or fireplaces. It's equally important to keep them away from cold drafts. A minimum temperature of around 13°C is ideal. Poinsettias also thrive in bright, indirect light.".
She added: “To prevent overwatering, only water the plant when the soil feels dry to the touch. Misting the leaves every few days can help boost humidity.”. Once the holiday season is over, shifting focus to year-round care will keep your poinsettia thriving.
Elise advised: “If you're planning to keep your poinsettia long-term—and you should—it’s essential to fertilize it monthly with a balanced household fertiliser. “Trim away any dead or dry stems in late spring to promote new growth and those signature red leaves. If the soil has become compacted, consider repotting with fresh, well-draining mix.
“To ensure your poinsettia’s leaves turn red again by Christmas, begin a 'daylight diet' in October. Place the plant in complete darkness for 12-14 hours overnight, then return it to a bright spot with indirect sunlight for at least 6-8 hours during the day.".
