Coffee fans will recall with horror, July 18 2024 – the day that Pret axed the free coffees and cheap food from its subscription. Previously customers paid £30 a month and were able to claim five free hot or iced drinks per day, as well as a 20% discount on food. But Club Pret, as you knew it, is long gone, as the chain introduced a new version in September 2024 that cost just £5 a month. For this lower price, members were entitled to 50% off five drinks each day.

The plan was for this price to rise from a fiver to £10 as of March 31 2025, but Pret has just announced a major U-turn has been made on that decision. The subscription is going to remain at the current price of £5 going forward and won’t be raised. Those who use the service were informed of this via email. The full update for subscribers read: ‘We are writing to you about some important updates to your Club Pret subscription fee. Our Club Pret monthly subscription fee will remain at just £5.

‘At Pret, we believe in offering high-quality, organic coffee and Barista-made drinks at fantastic value. With Club Pret, you’ll continue to enjoy great savings on up to five Barista-made drinks per day. ‘Thank you for being part of Club Pret. We love serving you and hope to see you in our shops very soon.’. This announcement follows some backlash to subscription change last year, with some people branding the proposed £10 fee ‘ridiculous’ and ‘awful value’.

Writing on X, @matthewseymour said: ‘Changing your subscription to £10 a month and no food discount when your prices are ridiculous anyway and only 50% off your hot drinks!! Have a word, I will be cancelling as I think many others will be!!! Shame on you.’. While journalist Thomas Mason claimed the new price wasn’t worth the money as it is, let alone if it were higher, saying: ‘It’s not great value, it’s a price increase! Under the current subscription, you can get up to 150 coffees a month £30. At £5 and 50% off, you’d be lucky to get 12 coffees per month for the same £30.’.

On Reddit a few users felt similarly, admitting they wouldn’t be ‘sticking around’ once the price went up to £10. ‘Nobody will pay £10 to access a discount,’ wrote u/Pallortrillian. The original Club Pret subscription launched in 2020 and was described as an ‘offer that seemed almost too good to be true’ by Pret UK and Ireland’s managing director, Clare Clough. But Clare later claimed the company ‘never really got comfortable’ with the 20% discount on food that the subscription offered, hence why it was removed it from the membership.

Speaking at the time, she added: ‘Given the majority of our customers are not Club Pret subscribers, our priority now is to focus on better value for everyone. ‘By making these changes, we are underlining our commitment to providing better value for all our Pret customers, as well as the Pret quality and service you’ve come to know and expect.’. This comes after several other drinks chains made big changes lately with Starbucks altering its loyalty scheme to give customers more points for every £1 spent.

Meanwhile hot chocolate chain Knoops announced it was planning a major UK expansion, doubling the number of stores in the UK. Do you have a story to share?.
