There once came a time when people dreaded doing DIY and saw household tasks as an inconvenient chore. Reluctantly digging out their power tools, homeowners would often be envious of those who could afford to pay for someone to do work on their property. But now the tides have changed, with much of the nation actually looking forward to customising their home in their free time and even making careers out of it.

Much of this appears to be down to DIY content taking over TikTok, with frugal influencers who are handy around the house gaining thousands of followers. Scott, from Stoke-on-Trent, boasts more than 200,000 followers on the platform after he started showing the process of stripping down his 1930s property. With no experience in DIY or the building trade whatsoever, the content creator attempted to build his own extension on the house.

He was quoted around £35,000 from traders but the building work only cost him only £9,179 when he did it on his own. He wrote: 'Back when the journey started. It's even hard for me to believe I did this with no experience.'.

Kerry, from West Yorkshire, even manged to build her own built-in wardrobe for under £1,000, when companies can charge thousands of pounds to make bespoke cupboards suited to certain rooms.
Her clips often receive much support and many questions from people who are eager to enter the DIY world themselves. Research from neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis, on behalf of Wickes which polled 2,036 UK adults, found that DIY is also helpful for Britons' wellbeing. Abbey wanted a dining table that cost more than £1,400 but instead made it herself for just £180. A whopping 54 per cent of those polled said that showing off their handcrafted achievements is great for their self-esteem.
And 60 per cent Brits are most likely to feel pride after completing a DIY job because they save money doing it themselves. Almost three quarters said that finishing DIY task makes them feel more like a 'capable adult'. A current popular trend includes panelling, which is where users add panels, usually made out of wood, to their walls. More than 40,000 people have made videos about #wallpanelling on TikTok.
DIYers usually paint them in a bid to make a room look more expensive or customise an area that may need a refresh. Textured hanging decor, such as hanging paintings or fabric wall art, is gaining traction among homeowners who are looking to make make a statement in their rooms without breaking the bank. The hashtag #walldecor has been tagged more than 370,000 times on TikTok and videos usually consist of people showing how to elevate a blank wall with art you can easily make yourself.
