Sarah Michelle Gellar is in talks to star in the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, according to reports. The Hollywood actress, 47, played sassy slayer, Buffy Summers, from 1997 to 2003 in the smash-hit series, which was loved by fans around the world. The supernatural show, which received critical and popular acclaim, is often listed among the greatest television series of all time - and now it's coming back!.
A sequel series of the iconic show is nearing a pilot order at Hulu, with Sarah said to be in final talks to play the titular character in the currently untitled project. According to Variety, the show, written by Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman, is said to focus on a new slayer, with Sarah returning to the role in a recurring part rather than series lead. As fans will remember, Miss Summers was one in a long line of young women chosen by fate to battle evil forces. The mysterious calling gifts her powers that dramatically increase physical strength, endurance, accelerated healing, intuition, and a degree of precognition, usually in the form of prophetic dreams. She is known as a reluctant hero who wants to live a normal life. However, she learns to embrace her destiny as the vampire slayer with aplomb.
For those wanting their Buffy fix now, the show, which is available for Disney+ subscribers, has also found a free new streaming home in the UK. ITV recently announced that all seven seasons are set to arrive on the ITVX streaming service as part of its winter line-up sometime between now and March. Meanwhile, Sarah recently revealed that she got in "a little bit of trouble" for sharing a snap from the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel.
While the actress herself won't be appearing in the film - as her character from the original movie is dead - she has been supporting her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr, who stars in the sequel. However, after sharing a picture of a chair with the movie title on it on Instagram, Sarah said she was ticked off. "You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say 'closed sets," she said in an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark.
She added: "Then I found out that they hadn't posted any pictures from the set yet [because they] hadn't announced they started filming. Yeah… that was an 'Oops! My bad!'".
