The franchise’s original film was released in 2001 and starred Mike Myers as the cantankerous ogre, who finds himself leaving his swamp to rescue Princes Fiona (Cameron Diaz) after making a deal with Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

Along the way he found himself joined by Donkey (Eddie Murphy) before eventually falling in love with the Princess. The movie grossed over $492 (£389) million worldwide and was followed by three sequels – Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek the Third in 2007 and Shrek Forever After in 2010 – as well as the spin-offs Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Then, last year, it was announced a fifth Shrek film was in development. Although details of the plot haven’t been revealed, the core cast will be returning, while Zendaya will also voice Shrek’s daughter Felicia. Now, a new teaser trailer for the movie has been released, however it’s left some ‘horrified’.

The 27-second clip shows Donkey asking the Magic Mirror who is ‘the fairest of them all’ before he replies saying ‘Shrek of course’ and showing images of the ogre pouting, dancing in a black leather bodysuit and then shirtless with a ripped chest.

The pair then scream as Felicia comes on screen and expresses her disgust while Fiona declares ‘ohh mumma likes’. As Shrek asks ‘who is making this stuff’ Pinocchio pops up and claims it wasn’t him before his nose quickly grows. Fans quickly shared their thoughts, with many not supportive of the new animation style.

‘Bring back old animation, WTF IS THIS,’ Riccoo commented on Instagram. ‘Ummm why do they look like that?’ Hope questioned. ‘Please keep the original animation…’ Aria begged. ‘We’re all excited for this comeback, but to be honest, it’s not good. Bring back the old design’ Fernando added.

‘Just lost every hope on this movie,’ Jano admitted. Others called the new look ‘horrendous’ and ‘horrific’. However, user comicarlton shared: ‘Reading these comments makes me realise how little the general public knows about animation. Like Shrek 4 came out 15 years ago ofc this is gonna look different.’.

Since launching 25 years ago the Shrek franchise has become the second biggest in animation history, earning $2.9 billion globally. The upcoming movie will also be directed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, and as head of story on Shrek Forever After, where he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin.

However, when Shrek 5 was announced in 2024, fans also expressed their concerns too. ‘I’m not gonna lie, I’m like actually scared out of my mind about this movie,’ user Mike posted on X. ‘If it’s good, the Internet is gonna meme literally everything about it. If it’s bad, it’s gonna be another Shrek the Thrid situation. We can’t win.’.

However, another declared ‘peak cinema incoming’. Before the movie was officially announced, Murphy had said in June that they started voice recording five months earlier. ‘I recorded the first act, and we’ll finish it up this year. Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie],’ he told Collider.

Cineworld is going all out for the release of Wicked, and we couldn’t be more excited. Shrek 5 will be released in cinemas on December 23, 2026. Got a story?.
