The romantic comedy was a Hollywood mainstay throughout the 2000s – producing household names such as Matthew McConaughey, Adam Sandler and Steve Carell to reel off just a few. The latter seized his opportunity in the big leagues with 2005’s 40-Year-Old Virgin, in which Carell portrayed the nerdy Andy Stitzer – who, goaded by his newfound work buddies, sets out to lose his virginity at the grand age of 40.

The movie, which Carell co-wrote alongside Anchorman creator Judd Apatow, was an overwhelming success - raking in more than $177 million at the box office from a budget of $26 million. The Hollywood hit saw Carell star opposite several well-known stars today including Paul Rudd, Kevin Hart and a budding Seth Rogen.

But, many fans of the 40-Year-Old Virgin, which has developed a cult-like following 20 years after its release, have been shocked to learn the fate of another co-star. Shelley Malil’s Haziz character isn’t a part of the main ensemble but scores laughs with his outrageous quips throughout the film. Malil also appeared in popular TV shows Scrubs and NYPD Blue.

However, in 2010, Malil was sentenced to 12 years to life in prison for the premeditated attempted murder of his then-girlfriend after stabbing her 23 times. The attack took place three years after Malil starred in the popular movie. He was released on parole four years earlier than scheduled in 2018 and remains out of prison, aged 60 years old.
