We tasted and rated a selection of lagers, ales and stouts for flavour. Copy link. twitter. facebook. whatsapp. email. Writing about non-alcoholic beer brings out a rather predictable set of comments: “Why bother?”; “I’d rather drink water”; “Just drink the real thing”. However, even if they aren’t for you, they are for a large and growing market of drinkers, particularly those in the 18-24 age group who want to moderate, alternate or just eliminate alcohol from their social events.

Here are my worst, middle and best no-lows for you to try, whether you are doing Dry January, just want to alternate your alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (known as zebra striping), or you just don’t drink alcohol at all but like the taste of beer.

With the exception of Guinness 0%, due to its instantly recognisable nitro pour, all beers were tasted blind to remove any brand or personal bias (which led to some genuine surprise on a couple of occasions, both positively and negatively). All were served at the appropriate temperature.
