Sir Tom Jones reflected on his "wonderful" life and career in a message shared with fans on social media recently. The singer, 84, issued the statement to mark a milestone in his acclaimed decades-long career, which has included once winning a Grammy Award. He celebrated the 60th anniversary of his song It's Not Unusual just days ago. It was the second single to ever be released by Tom but was his first to chart upon its release in 1965. The song topped the charts in the UK and then reached the top 10 in the US, making it the first of numerous hit singles in his career.
The song - which appeared on Tom's debut album Along Came Jones - has been covered by various artists over the years, including Cher and the Supremes. It's Not Unusual was also notably used in the sitcom the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as the soundtrack to the now iconic 'Carlton dance'. Tom reflected on the song and the success he's achieved in the decades since its release in a post on Instagram. He expressed gratitude to his fans and said that he would share a "rare performance" from his variety series This Is Tom Jones, which ran from 1969 and 1971, for the occasion.
Alongside a clip from the performance, he wrote: "60 years ago I released It's Not Unusual, and what a ride it's been! Back then I would never have believed this one tune would have led on to such a wonderful life and career, full of music, fantastic people and touring all over the world.". He added: "None of this would have been possible without the enduring support from my fans from day one, so thank you, you are sincerely loved and appreciated. To celebrate, I'd like to share a rare performance of the song from my sixties TV show THIS IS TOM JONES, which is you can enjoy now on my YouTube channel. Check it out, it's great fun to see the style and energy of those times. So here's to music, the stage and YOU!".
The anniversary comes after Tom announced last week that he will be touring internationally later this year. He wrote at the time: "Thrilled to announce my band and I will be touring the States and Canada this spring! I'm very much looking forward to be performing again for you all, see you along the road soon." The tour is scheduled to run from April to May. Like this story?
