Vera fans were an emotional wreck as Brenda Blethyn's final scenes appeared on screen this week. Last year, Brenda announced she would be departing the beloved role, leading to the end of the hit ITV drama after over 10 years on our screens. There were just two final episodes in the last series, culminating in the final episode, The Dark Wives. Flashbacks showed Vera reliving her childhood with her father, Hector.

It was revealed he struggled with alcohol after his wife died, leading to Vera taking on a carer's role. Away from her personal life, Vera also had to investigate the case, when a body was found at the bottom of some local legendary stones called The Dark Wives. The promising young student was assaulted and left so far from home that Vera had to work out why.

In her final scenes, Vera saved young Chloe from being killed - as she admitted she saw a lot of herself in the young girl. "Life's just one scary decision after another," she told her before offering the team a round of drinks. Not only did she save a life, she gained a companion when a stray dog entered her closed-off life, making it a touching ending to the series.

Fans were in tears over the touching ending, with one user writing on X/Twitter: "She kept the dog...i knew she was a good un," and another posting: "That was a lovely ending to #Vera glad she took in the dog." One viewer commented: "There's something in my eye... 14 gripping seasons of #Vera in beautiful #Northumberland concluded tonight. Glad she kept the dog. Thanks to @BrendaBlethyn, the cast & crew, Ann Cleeves and all the screenwriters over the years. You've all been brilliant.".
