Serena Williams raised eyebrows when she appeared to do a dance associated with the Crip gang during Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday. The move sparked a slew of criticism for the tennis pro, especially because her sister Yetunde Price was tragically murdered by a man who was a member of the gang decades prior. The killing completely shattered the extremely 'tight-knit' family and sent ripples through the sports world.

Before her passing, mother-of-three Yetunde dedicated her life to helping others as a nurse. So when she was shot and killed by gang members in 2003, the world was left wondering, what led to the horrific shootout?. The events that transpired that night completely captivated the nation and stumped multiple juries, leading to numerous mistrials before justice was finally served. But Yetunde's killer was ultimately set free on parole in 2018 due to good behavior - something Serena found out via Instagram moments before she was set to hit the court at a tennis match.

Yetunde's devastating death and the aftermath have plagued the entire family for years, which is why Serena's dance at the Super Bowl over the weekend was especially shocking to her dedicated fans. As she makes waves for seemingly performing a move associated with the gang that is said to have killed her sister, FEMAIL has revealed what exactly happened to Yetunde all those years ago. Serena and Venus' mother, Oracene Price, had three daughters from her first marriage. Yetunde, who was born in 1972, was the oldest of the Williams sisters (seen in 2003).

Yetunde (seen bottom left with her sisters) got her nursing license after graduating from high school and worked at Francis Medical Center in Corona, California, for nine years. Before Serena and Venus' mother, Oracene Price, tied the knot with their father, Richard Williams, she was married to a man named Yusef Rasheed. Together, they welcomed three daughters, and Yetunde, who was born in 1972, was the oldest of the Williams sisters.

The family grew up in Corona, California, and while her sisters developed a passion for tennis at a young age, Yetunde had a different love: helping others. She got her nursing license after graduating from high school, and when her family left Compton to move to Florida so Serena and Venus could train, she stayed in California and pursued her career in nursing. She worked at Francis Medical Center in Corona, California, for nine years, and welcomed three children.

'Yetunde's children became central to her life,' the Los Angeles Times previously said in a profile on her. 'With her work and her children, she had a full life.'. 'Venus and Serena's success, that was a phenomenon, but all of that paled in comparison to the love in her children,' someone close to her told the publication. Just before her death, Yetunde had opened a hair salon and she started working part time as her sisters' personal assistant. She's seen with Serena in 2003.

'We were just innocent passersby. Believe me, if anything, I would go through that myself twice before I let that happen to my girl. '[It] was dark that night - super dark. Next thing you know, I see flashes to my side. I don't know if it's from the front or the side.... I don't know how many shots were fired. 'I didn't look once at my lady. I'm trying to get through this. I'm trying to get away, I'm trying to get her to safety. 'Once I get to [safety] I see the back window is shattered. I look to the right and said, "Baby, are you all right?" I look at Tunde and there was blood everywhere. 'That's half my life right there. I don't even know how to feel right now. I'm not going to ask God why he didn't take both of us.'.
