Wicked director Jon M. Chu has revealed technical difficulties prevented the trailer for Wicked: For Good being shown at this year's Super Bowl. While several huge commercials aired during the Philadelphia Eagles' victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, missing from the action was a teaser for the hotly anticipated sequel movie. The new film – which will see Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo return to play Glinda and Elphaba - is set for release on November 21, 2025, which currently puts it up against Paramount's The Running Man remake starring Glen Powell.

In a new interview, Jon, 45, has addressed why a teaser for the blockbuster failed to make an appearance at the Super Bowl. Speaking on the red carpet at the 2025 Writer's Guild of America Awards, he said: 'I can't say when we're getting the trailer. 'All I can say is that, in order for me to have gotten a trailer for the Super Bowl, I would've had to turn over visual effects to be done by now so many months ago when we were still in the middle of edits.'.

He continued to ScreenRant: 'There were technical difficulties that prevented us, but we have a lot coming out, so stay tuned. I can't say anything else, though.'. The first trailer for Wicked: Part One was shared at the beginning of last year's Super Bowl. Wicked director Jon M. Chu has revealed technical difficulties prevented the trailer for Wicked part two being shown at this year's Super Bowl. The upcoming second film has been slated for release on November 21, 2025.
The second film, like the first movie, is also based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 book that showed characters from the Wizard of Oz in a whole new light. It was announced in December that the sequel would be titled Wicked: For Good rather than its initial title, Wicked: Part 2. Ariana disclosed the story behind the name of the upcoming movie and when she found out about the subtitle change. Speaking to Variety, she said: 'We had [For Good] printed on our original scripts, the hard copies that we were originally given,' Ariana shared in her new interview.
'We were floating around different ideas but the scripts were printed with it since day one. I'm glad it's official now because we grew rather attached to it.'. A fan-favorite lyric runs: 'Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you, because I knew you, I have been changed for good.'. Ariana and Cynthia are both slated to return as Glinda and Elphaba, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum signed up too.
Jon previously confirmed to Variety that fans can expect to see more of Dorothy in Wicked: For Good, but stayed tight-lipped about how much she'll be in it. The sequel film was renamed in December from Part Two to For Good. 'We will revisit those characters in movie two,' he said, when asked about Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. 'In the show, Dorothy is around. They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much.
'I won't say whether she's a character, necessarily, in movie two. 'There's a part of me that wants everyone's Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover.’. Wicked made an eye-watering $726.7million at the box office and proved popular amongst critics too, with the film receiving 10 nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana.
