A woman has compared Valentine’s Day cards in the US and UK and there’s an obvious difference. Amber Kacherian, an actress and singer from Tampa, Florida, USA, is known for creating funny videos on social media. She recently shared a video on TikTok picking up Valentine’s Day cards from an American store and a British one to see how they compare. There was a stark difference between them. The American cards were very sweet and romantic whereas the British Valentine’s Day cards were quite the opposite but Amber said, in the caption of her TikTok video, that British humour is “top tier.”.
The US cards, adorned with love hearts, gems and mainly the colour red had romantic messages written on them, including “happy hearts day”, “be my valentine” and “you’re that person.” In comparison, the UK Valentine’s Day cards generally had a more plain design with white backgrounds and messages like “it’s remarkable how long we’ve tolerated each other”, “you’re ok for a massive b***end” and “thank God you are better in bed than you are at driving.”.
Amber’s TikTok video, posted on Monday, February 3, has received 281,300 views, 9,124 likes and more than 300 comments. Brits in the comment section gave some reason behind the humour in the UK Valentine’s Day cards. One said: “The UK, where the meaner we are to you the more we like you.” Another added: “That’s because in the UK we get sarcasm.”. A third user claimed British humour is “unlike any other” and a fourth said they “just knew” what kind of UK cards Amber was going to pick up. Further people described British humour as “unmatched” and “the best in the world.”.
Even someone from Australia expressed their love for British humour: “English sense of humour is my favourite in the world and I’m an Aussie. They are hilarious.”. Some users shared what type of UK greeting cards they have received or given before. One person said: “Remember getting a birthday card saying in dog years you would be dead.”. Another person revealed: “It’s mine and my brother’s competition every year on who can get our dad the rudest and outrageous birthday card or Father’s Day card.” Valentine’s Day takes place every year on February 14 and it is celebrated across the world.
Many people use this day to show their love and appreciation for their partner or special someone. Couples exchange gifts or dress up to go out for a romantic meal. Others opt for a quiet but loving night in with candles and a home cooked meal, for example. Cards are always found in stores for Valentine’s Day every year and while some people stick to the romantic ones, others like to go for the funny cards to add a light-hearted tone to the day.
