Sitting crestfallen in his six-yard box at Old Trafford, Jack Butland felt a dreaded sensation wash over him. His attempt to punch Christian Eriksen’s corner clear had ended in calamity. There were 74,000 people inside the Theatre of Dreams yet, momentarily, he felt like the loneliest man in the world.

Butland made errors in his formative years at Birmingham. They happened at Stoke and throughout his various loan spells, Truth be told, they’ve started to mount up in his time at Rangers. This one, though, felt more significant than any other. It came on the European stage at the very place where he’d been on loan immediately prior to moving to Glasgow. It arrived at a juncture in the match when Rangers looked like they’d weathered a storm.

Mostly, though, this time around, no argument could be offered in mitigation. A backwards punch into his own net from a routine set-piece was squarely on him. While Butland was certainly deserving of the criticism that inevitably came his way in the wake of the 2-1 defeat, he was also due a sliver of credit.

Butland is fully focused going into the Europa League clash against USG following his error against Manchester United. The Rangers goalkeeper was left dejected after his mistake helped United to a 2-1 win. He dusted himself down and made a couple of saves which ensured his side stayed in the contest when it would have been easier to go to pieces. There was a time, he admits, when that was much more likely.
