AC Milan are leading the race for Kyle Walker after he asked to quit Manchester City. Walker, 34, who was made City captain 18 months ago after rejecting the chance to join Bayern Munich, wants to take up an offer from abroad during the January transfer window after being made aware of the Italian side’s interest.
And while it’s understood no formal offer has yet been made, Milan are believed to be confident that they will get a deal for the veteran England international - who has 18 months left on his deal at the Etihad - tied up soon. Pep Guardiola confirmed wantaway Walker was not considered for the Blues' 8-0 FA Cup romp over League Two Salford City after informing sporting director Txiki Begiristain of his desire to move. The City boss did not clarify where Walker could move to, with interest also from the Saudi Pro League.
Guardiola said: "It's not easy for me to say but Kyle is not here because two days ago he asked to explore the option to play abroad. He asked after the Treble, when Bayern wanted him, but the offer was not good enough. For that reason, I prefer to play other players whose mind is here.
"Kyle went to Txiki Begiristain. Maybe I am wrong but I am pretty convinced that you should keep no-one who doesn't want to be here. Kyle asked to explore. It doesn't mean it's going to happen, you never know. "I respect him a lot because I'm more than grateful. He has been here many years for us. He's been important for the national team but he said 'I want to explore, in my mind and my heart I want to explore it. I don't know what's going to happen.".
