Ange Postecoglou ripped into his Tottenham side for 'shying away' from the challenge of playing Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final. Spurs were hammered 4-0 in Thursday's second leg, as they threw away a one goal lead from the reverse fixture. To make the night even more humiliating, the visitors failed to register a single shot on target in the entire 90 minutes. It means that the club's trophy drought will extend past the 17 year mark, though they are still in the FA Cup and Europa League. It is the latest low point of what has been a miserable second season in charge for Postecoglou.

And the Spurs boss failed to hide his disappointment in his side's awful performance. He blasted his troops for not playing to their strengths as he branded Liverpool 'by far' the better team. "Tough night. Credit to Liverpool. Never really got to grips with the game. I think both the first two goals we could have done better with. But what's really important is we didn't play to our strengths today," the Australian told ITV Sport.

"We shied away from the challenge. We allowed Liverpool to get into the rhythm. We've still got competitions to play for and we have to make sure that with all the opportunities we have we tackle them our way.". He added to Sky Sports: "I guess that Liverpool deserved the victory. They were the far better team. They were too good for us. We allowed them to get into the game and we were not as aggressive as we needed to be.

"We didn't get the game started off in the right footing. I am disappointed that we didn't give a good account of ourselves. Very disappointed. We had a great opportunity, but unfortunately we didn’t grab it.". Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher delivered a brutal assessment of Tottenham's performance. He insisted he never had faith they would be able to hold onto their first leg lead. "It was never in doubt before the game. It's Tottenham! When do Tottenham ever win a big game? When do Tottenham ever go and surprise, win against the odds? The odds were massively in favour against Liverpool," he told Sky Sports.

"But it's not just this Spurs team. They never shock you, never do something out of the ordinary. I'm trying to remember the last big game they won: it was probably that semi-final against Ajax in the Champions League. "Whenever they go into a big game as a club, nobody ever believes they're going to win. That's not me as a Liverpool fan, those Tottenham fans there tonight - not one of them believed they were going to win and to go Wembley! They just won't.".
