Apple has pledged to update its artificial intelligence summarisation tools following the BBC's complaint over faulty summaries of news pushed to users on its latest iPhones. Last month, the BBC took issue with the AI system inaccurately digesting a story about Luigi Mangione, wrongly implying that he had shot himself after he was accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare chief Brian Thompson.

Last week, the tools, known as Apple Intelligence, inaccurately summarised a collection of BBC Sport headline notifications by prematurely declaring Luke Littler as the World Darts Championship Final winner and claiming Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.

In their grievance, the BBC said: "These AI summarisations by Apple do not reflect – and in some cases completely contradict – the original BBC content.". They stressed the importance of urgent action from Apple, stating:"It is critical that Apple urgently addresses these issues as the accuracy of our news is essential in maintaining trust.".

Acknowledging the problem, the tech leader informed the broadcaster that an upgrade for the smart summary feature, known as Apple Intelligence, is on the horizon, expected "in the coming weeks". They also highlighted that using this AI overview tool remains at the user's discretion.

In response, the technology giant told the BBC an update to Apple Intelligence would be rolled out “in the coming weeks”, and also noted that using the summarisation feature was optional. “Apple Intelligence features are in beta and we are continuously making improvements with the help of user feedback,” Apple said in a statement.
