Arne Slot has revealed he was happy that a possible move to Tottenham did not come off... but now wants Ange Postecoglou to win a trophy with Spurs. The Liverpool manager takes his team to north London on Sunday, less than two years after being heavily tipped as a permanent successor to Antonio Conte.

At the end of the 2022/23 season, Slot was believed to be Daniel Levy’s number one target but decided to remain in Holland. There were conflicting rumours about the reasons for the move not happening, with suggestions from Dutch sources being that Slot turned down a Levy offer while the Spurs camp was adamant no formal approach had been made.

“The problem is that the ones who know do not want to talk about it, and the ones who don’t know do want to talk about it,” smiled Slot. “That sometimes happens in football. I’ve always preferred not to say anything about it. It might be true, it might not be true. I’ll leave it with what I said back then. I was really happy that I stayed at Feyenoord. That I can say.”.

A year later, of course, Slot was moving to Anfield, but he clearly believes Spurs did finally get their perfect coach when they settled on Postecoglou. And the Anfield boss thinks Postecoglou’s approach is doing English football a power of good and would love to see the Spurs man win some silverware.

Slot explained: “If a manager plays such an attacking brand of football, please support him, because this is what we want. Only one team can win the league and only one team can win the FA Cup, but the others have to play football as well and just be happy that we have managers like him that want to play this brand of football.
