Defending FA Cup holders Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round by beating Arsenal on penalties. Sunday's first half have suffered from a lack of quality from both sides, with Gabriel Martinelli coming closest before his effort was ruled out for offside.

The game erupted into life after the interval with United as Bruno Fernandes put the visitors into the lead before United's momentum was halted when Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second booking. Arsenal then promptly found an equaliser through a deflected volley from Gabriel.

The Gunners then had a golden opportunity to take the lead after being awarded a penalty but Altay Bayindir produced a fine stop to deny Martin Odegaard from 12 yards. After a tense extra 30 minutes the game was decided by spot kicks, with a miss from Kai Havertz sending Ruben Amorim's side through.
