Rangers fans could be stranded in Manchester after Thursday night’s Europa League clash at Old Trafford as Storm Eowyn threatens to wreak havoc across the country. Supporters have been warned they may struggle to return to Scotland tomorrow, when gale force winds are set to see northbound trains cancelled or delayed.
With an amber weather warning in place, TransPennine Express (TPE) are urging customers not to travel between Manchester/Liverpool and Glasgow/Edinburgh on Friday due to potentially dangerous conditions. Rangers have sold out their 3,768 ticket allocation for the game with Manchester United, but thousands more ticketless fans will head south.
Up to 2,000 supporters have secured briefs for the fan zone at the BEC Arena in Trafford Park where the game will be shown on giant screens. Philippe Clement and his players check out Old Trafford ahead of their Europa League clash. With the match kicking off at 8pm and finishing at approximately 9.45pm, many fans will have anticipated spending the night in Manchester and returning home tomorrow.
However, TPE have warned fans that Friday services will be ‘severely impacted’, and those that are able to run are expected to be affected by delays and short-notice cancellations. A TPE spokesperson said: ‘We’ll do everything possible to keep people moving under difficult conditions. However, due to the weather warnings in place, we are having to issue advice not to travel on two of our routes.’.
