Arsenal suffer Matheus Cunha transfer blow as £70m striker target in contract talks

Arsenal's hopes of landing Matheus Cunha in January have been dealt a blow, with Wolves working on a new deal for their star man. Mikel Arteta's Gunners have been linked with a move for attacking reinforcements after losing Bukayo Saka to injury. The England international is set for an extensive spell on the sidelines after hamstring surgery, leaving Arsenal thin up top.
Summer signing Raheem Sterling has been missing through injury himself in recent weeks, while talk of a recall for Fabio Vieira has cooled. Vieira has spent the first half of the season on loan at Porto, whose manager Vitor Bruno shut down suggestiions he might return to North London.
Back in January 2023, Arsenal looked within the Premier League for mid-season reinforcements as Leandro Trossard joined from Brighton. Cunha had been linked as the subject of a similar switch, but Vitor Pereira's club are keen to put a stop to it with a new deal.
According to The Mail, Wolves are 'determined' to tie £70m-rated Cunha down to a new deal. Such an agreement could include a release clause, but would be likely to keep the Brazilian at Molineux for the remainder of the current season at the very least.
Cunha, 25, joined Wolves on an initial loan from Atletico Madrid in January 2023. He triggered a permanent move at the end of that season for a club-record fee and was the club's top-scorer last season with 14 goals in all competitions. He is already close to matching that tally this term with 10 goals to his name in just 18 league outings. Two of those came in the first three matches under Wolves' new boss, with Pereira collecting seven points from a possible nine to guide the club out of the bottom three.
