The next eight days are likely to determine what will happen to Aston Villa and West Ham over the remaining four months of the season. Villa’s chase for a centre-back became even more urgent when Tyrone Mings, who had started the match as one of only two fit central defenders, suffered what looked a worrying knee injury during the first half.
And West Ham’s hunt for a forward will surely intensify. Had Graham Potter’s team possessed a sharp, confident centre-forward, they would have taken three points from a hugely encouraging performance. Villa transfer chief Monchi will be busy until the transfer window closes on February 3 and so will West Ham chairman David Sullivan, as the club are finalising the departure of technical director Tim Steidten.
Goals in either half from Jacob Ramsey and Emerson meant the points were shared as referee Peter Bankes lost control in the first half and struggled to regain it. Lucas Paqueta escaped punishment for his pathetic attempt to have Lucas Digne sent off just before half-time and there were various fractious episodes that Bankes simply did not handle well enough.
The result also means Villa have failed to win any of their last six league fixtures that have followed a Champions League game – a record they must improve to have a chance of returning to the competition next season. Emerson Palmieri scored the equaliser as West Ham drew 1-1 with Aston Villa on Sunday.
