Australia have won an all-time classic Boxing Day Test, taking seven wickets in the final session at the MCG to defeat India by 184 runs and go 2-1 up in the Border-Gavaskar series. In front of a record overall attendance for a Test crowd in Australia, the hosts had to get past defiant star India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (84 from 208), who was dramatically dismissed by Pat Cummins.
Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon (2-39), who has struggled during this series, took the final wicket with 39 minutes left and 12 overs remaining to seal an extraordinary win. However, the end of the match was hit by controversy as Yashasvi Jaiswal had a heated discussion with the on-field umpires after his crucial video dismissal on the last day.
The Indian opener had made 84 and loomed as his team's last slim hope for a draw when he tried to hook Pat Cummins. The Australians immediately reviewed the not-out call and that prompted a lengthy look at the footage by the third umpire. The Aussie team (left to right, Mitch Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins and Sam Konstas) launch into wild celebrations after beating India at the MCG.
The 184-run victory brought one of the most thrilling Boxing Day Tests ever to a fitting conclusion on Monday evening. Indian fans roared their approval when the 'snicko' was played on the scoreboard and it showed no clear noise. But the footage also clearly showed a deflection and, eventually, Jaiswal was given out to leave India 7-140.
