BBC’s new comedy series Amandaland sparked the same demand from viewers as Lucy Punch returned to our screens as the high-strung mother, Amanda. Following the events of Motherland, she finds herself navigating the challenges of raising teenagers after relocating to South Harlesden in London following her divorce. She’s been forced to swap Waitrose for Tesco Metro and had to downsize to a flat, which she is not pleased about.

With new school gates, Amanda wasted no time trying to figure out her new surroundings and it doesn't take long for her to reunite with long-suffering former bestie Anne (played by Philippa Dunne), who showed her the ropes, points out that the kids' school is famous for the Clockwork Orange torture scene, and told her who the cool parents are. She quickly latches on to lesbian parents Della (Siobhán McSweeney) and Fi (Rochenda Sandall), however their free-spirited nature and casual parenting techniques come as a bit of a culture shock for poor old Amanda, who very quickly realises she’s a little out of her depth.

If she's not got enough on her plate, her mum Felicity (Joanna Lumley) is a constant presence in her life and she doesn’t make things any easier. The spin-off saw several original Motherland cast members also make a return. However just minutes into the show viewers insisted the BBC should have just made another series of Motherland instead of creating a brand new show. One viewer wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Nice to have some of the old crew back for #Amandaland and there were 2 or 3 really hilarious lines but slightly disappointing overall. Please. Bring back Motherland. #Motherland.”.

Another said: “Enjoyable but I kinda wish they had just done another series of Motherland. #Amandaland #MotherLand.” A third wrote: “This is rubbish, nowhere as good as Motherland #Amandaland.”. One claimed: “I loved #motherland so much. #Amandaland is not quite there.” Meanwhile another added: “#AmandaLand if it was a brand new series everyone would love it, it's only because we are comparing it to motherland that it doesn't quite match up.”.
