DJ Spoony announced to BBC Radio 2 listeners this week that he required surgery after suffering a bleed on his brain. The presenter, 54 - whose real name is John Joseph - spoke about the experience on his afternoon show on Monday. He had previously posted about being hospitalised on Instagram just hours before his return to work on BBC Radio.

He told listeners that he had ended up in hospital shortly before Christmas after experiencing headaches. DJ Spoony shared that doctors identified a "small bleed" on his brain and he subsequently underwent an operation over the issue. Speaking on his radio show, he said: "So yes, the secret is out. I was off last week because on Saturday, the 21st of December, I got up early in the morning. I'd been having headaches for about three to four weeks and I'd been putting it off.

"It was hurting, then it wasn't hurting, and I thought I'd go to the hospital. They did some tests and said they were going to give me a little scan and then it came back with the scan results and [the doctor] said 'it looks like you have a small bleed to the brain and we need to send you over to Addenbrooke's [Hospital]. The specialists there have seen it'.

"I was like 'okay, no problem' so sat down there in the waiting room and went and got myself a packet of crisps and a chocolate bar. I did have a bottle of water with me though, alright, cause I didn't want to go all bad. Then he came back to me and he said 'look Mr Joseph, we're just waiting to hear from the bed admissions' and I was like, 'What do I need a bed for?' He said 'oh you're gonna have to stay in. We need to operate'. At that point, I had no idea. So y'know a few ... I've got to say this, the hardest part was being nil by month for 10, 12, 14 hours at times.
