Are you ready to be cold, wet and miserable in the New Year? You can hop-foot it to a warm and sunny European island just a few hours away instead. The Portuguese island of Madeira is known for its exceptional beauty, pleasant tourist spots and spectacular nature. On the island’s southwest coast is the municipality of Ponta do Sol, which Visit Madeira said is famous for “beaches and typical villages”.

The area is also where products like bananas and sugar cane are grown. Quiet with some 8,000 residents, relatively secluded by easy to reach, the area may just be the place some worn and weary Brits will want to visit in January. Data from the US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said temperatures reach pleasant highs of 19C and lows of 14C.

Visit Madeira said that Ponta do Sol is the part of the island that has the most hours of sunshine every year. It is a “place much appreciated by those seeking to enjoy sunny days on the beach or in contact with some idyllic spots in nature”. If you want culture during your stay, look no further than Ponta do Sol Beach. With supposedly great water quality and pleasant landscape, the small beach is only 160 metres long, so it is perfect for some peace and quiet.

Madalena do Mar Beach, meanwhile, is close to rocky cliffs and loved by bathers. Visit Madeira said: “This bathing resort is a combination of pebbles and black sand. It is bathed by crystal-clear waters with mild temperatures all year round, and low swell.”.
