Designed to encourage Brits to travel by rail, last year’s sale saved passengers around £5.8million in total and resulted in an extra 440,000 journeys taken by train. This year however, there’s set to be even more discounts on thousands of popular routes.

Almost all UK train operators are taking part, including Transport for Wales and ScotRail, and offers include journeys from the likes of Liverpool to London for as little as £7, or Preston to Edinburgh from just £8.40. You can get your hands on bargain advance and off-peak fares (for travel between January 17 and March 31) from January 14 to January 20.

These offers won’t last long though, and there are only a limited number of tickets, so passengers are being encouraged act fast. Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, tells Metro: ‘I’m launching the biggest rail sale this country has ever seen, with up to half price discounts on more than 2 million tickets.

‘Passengers have saved around £12 million over the past two sales, and with destinations covering the length and breadth of the country, there’s more than ever to be saved this year. Set sail to the Mediterranean in 2025 – here's all you need to know.
