The veteran boxer who knocked out legendary Lennox Lewis in 1994 has returned to the ring to win his bout via early stoppage on Tuesday. At 59, Oliver McCall became the oldest former heavyweight champion to win a professional boxing match in November 2024. Despite his age, he returned to the ring in Nashville, US, for a fight against 52-year-old American Gary Cobia, who has a professional record of three wins and four losses.

After a dominant first round, McCall - with a total of 77 bouts throughout his career - was declared the winner as his opponent refused to continue the fight. This has marked his 61st professional boxing win, while 40 of them were by knockouts. McCall returned to the ring after a five-year pause and came back with a dominant victory over Stacy Frazier in November 2024. Just days after the controversial bout between Jake Paul and heavyweight star Mike Tyson, McCall has called out the 28-year-old in his post-fight interview. He said: 'I want to get revenge for Nate Robinson and then for what he’s done to Mike Tyson, that would be awesome.'. The veteran made his professional debut in 1985 with a victory over Lou Bailey, nine years before winning the heavyweight title against British boxing legend Lennox Lewis.

After a competitive first round - won by Lewis on the scorecards - McCall aggressively started the second and dropped his opponent to the canvas. Referee Jose Guadalupe Garcia had to stop the fight and declare the new WBC heavyweight champion. A frustrated Lewis then claimed: 'I was totally robbed. I was cleared to fight on.'. However, referee Garcia defended his position by saying: 'I'm absolutely sure about what I did. Lennox Lewis was knocked out.
