A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after allegedly gunning down his entire family before drunkenly calling police to confess to the quadruple homicide. Murder suspect Diego Leyva is now in custody and facing first-degree murder charges after calling The Valencia County Sheriff's Office at around 3.30am on Saturday, New Mexico State Police said. The teen allegedly told a dispatcher that he had killed his family, and then walked out with his hands in the air when officers arrived at his home in the city of Belen, New Mexico.

Diego's 42-year-old dad Leonardo Leyva, 35-year-old mum Adriana Bencomo, 16-year-old sister Adrian Leyva, and 14-year-old brother Alexander Leyva were all found dead with gunshot wounds inside the home, according to law enforcement. State police described Leyva as being “extremely intoxicated” while he was taken into custody without incident.

The force added that a handgun was found on the kitchen table inside the property. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital to detox, then booked into the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque on Sunday morning, according to officials. A former teacher of the teenager spoke of her disbelief that he could be responsible for the murders. Vanessa LaGrange told the Guardian: “I would never have thought that something like this would happen and that Diego would be capable of doing something like this. Everyone’s in shock.”.
