Brenda Blethyn revealed why her character Vera Stanhope didn't meet her end in the series, even as the show drew its final curtain after a 14-year run. The cherished ITV crime drama concluded recently, with a duo of one-hour specials capturing the imagination of viewers one last time.

Fans had been on tenterhooks over the fate of Brenda's character, but Vera triumphantly emerged unscathed from the concluding instalment, leaving audiences touched by the actress's heartfelt performances in the closing scenes. A peek behind the curtains was offered to the show's loyal followers in ITV's reflective documentary Vera, Farewell Pet; it was there that Brenda explained her reasons for insisting Vera be spared.

Choked up, she confessed: "I didn't want Vera killed off because I suspected that she'd be living on in the books. She's a sensible woman, Vera, she knows when it's time to call it a day. In the same way Brenda Blethyn knows when it's time to call it a day. You just sense when the time is right.".

The tearful 78-year-old actress opened up further: "On the last day filming on set, I have to say I felt very emotional. It's her packing up her stuff and backing out of the office and I could have cried to be honest," reports Chronicle Live. As a tear rolled down her cheek, Brenda reminisced: "Oh it's coming back to me." Reflecting on her journey, she added with mixed emotions: "It's so bitter sweet, it really is because I've loved every bit of this job.".
