Britalian restaurant famed for fried egg carbonara shuts after just eight months A highly praised British Italian restaurant in Peckham has closed after just eight months after the owners said extra cost pressures created by the Budget meant “we just couldn’t make the numbers add up.”.

We knew that trading conditions for hospitality were tough, and went into business with our eyes open to the risk of trying to create our own ‘Britalian’ niche, but the unforeseen additional cost pressures created by the autumn Budget came at the wrong stage of our business cycle.

However, today the pair said they are closing with immediate effect “due to challenging trading conditions, which were compounded by the autumn Budget, and before Café Britaly had time to build up enough momentum to generate sustainable revenue.”.

Café Britaly opened in May last year by co-owners Richard Crampton-Platt and Alex Purdie to favourable reviews from critics despite an online furore over its “scandalous” fried egg topped carbonara.

Measures announced in the Budget included increases in the rare and a reduction in the threshold for employers’ National Insurance, which are due to come into effect in April and are expected to hit the hospitality sector particularly hard.
