BRITISH forces body armour does not stop bullets, tests have found. Defence chiefs ordered a major recall after scans revealed cracks in bullet proof plates. Troops will face mortal danger as top brass scramble to find replacements.. The flaws were discovered in ceramic plates known as enhanced combat body armour. The Army, Navy and RAF have at least 120,000 sets. Armed Forces minister John Healey says in a letter to chiefs: “I will not accept a make do and mend approach to the safety or operational capability of our people.

"I know you will not either.”. Plans to replace the plates, in use since the 1980s, had been delayed. Labour blames Tory cuts. Some can switch to Osprey and Virtus kit but Marine Commandos and sailors at sea are banned from using those as the extra weight might drown them. Every plate is being tested for flaws. So far’ one in 10 has failed. The MoD said: “As a precaution, its use has been suspended in all but unavoidable circumstances.”.
