Byoma launches first ever vegan Mucin Serum – here are my honest thoughts

Byoma first launched in 2022, and over the years the brand has continued to expand its affordable skincare collection to target various skin concerns. The beauty brand has done it again, and introduced a new product to its roster – meet Byoma’s Phyto Mucin Glow Serum. Not only is the Phyto Mucin Glow Serum a new addition to Byoma’s range, but it is the first ever vegan and cruelty free mucin serum to hit the market, which is big news.

Byoma’s latest launch is a vegan alternative to snail mucin skincare serum.  Formulated with plant-based peptides and phytomucin to mimic snail mucin.  This lightweight and non-comedogenic serum promises to nourish, moisturise, plump and soothe the skin.  It is free from alcohol as well as fragrances, is gluten-free and cruelty-free, and has been dermatologically tested. Byoma prides itself on being a vegan and cruelty free brand. To honour this, the British label has formulated the serum using peptides and phytomucin derived from plants. This serum also calls on the brand’s signature barrier lipid complex to heal and soothe aggravated skin and a compromised skin barrier.

The key ingredient, and major talking point, is the inclusion of phytomucin, which is a bio-based ingredient inspired by Korean technology to mimic snail mucin. This ingredient works to hydrate the skin on a deeper level, heal and soothe the skin, as well as strengthen the skin barrier to protect against future damage, flare ups or breakouts. The combination of phytomucin with the vitamin B derivative and peptides, aims to nourish the skin, even the skin tone and texture, as well as boost its elasticity and luminosity.

I put this serum to the test to see if it delivers on all of the promises mentioned above. I also wanted to see for myself if it is truly non-sticky, which I assume snail mucin products to be. I applied the serum on cleansed skin as part of my morning routine, and I was instantly blown away.  My skin drank this serum up in seconds, without a trace of the product left behind.   To my surprise, this serum didn’t leave any residue behind, and it wasn’t tacky at all, plus it was easy to apply too.

Admittedly, I expected this serum to be a gloopy consistency or extremely runny, but it is neither.  The consistency is exactly what it says on the tin, a lightweight serum that blends seamlessly into the skin. I am also dubious of moisturisers and serums that clog my pores, especially as I have been going through bouts of hormonal breakouts of late. Thankfully, this formula is non-comedogenic, alcohol and fragrance free, which makes it ideal for all skin types, including those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.

I trialled the serum on its own to see how it fared, and it worked to brighten and rehydrate my skin. I then included the product into my morning skincare regime. I layered the serum under another moisturiser and an SPF, and it sat perfectly underneath without any piling, which is a huge tick in my beauty books. My next test was to see how the latest skincare saviour would be under make-up, and, guess what? It was flawless.  This serum is not only a skincare product, but it doubles up as a make-up primer too as it created a smooth base for my make-up to sit on top effortlessly. By layering make-up on top it also allowed my skin’s natural glow (thanks to the serum) to shine through and enhance the products I applied on top.

All in all, I highly recommend Byoma’s latest innovation, and urge you to shop the product quickly before it sells out, because (let’s be real) it will. Byoma’s Phyto Mucin Glow Serum retails for a purse friendly £14.99, and is available to shop at Boots now.  However, it is set to launch in other stockists next month, so keep your eyes peeled.
