Britain's great Christmas getaway is under way - yet travellers have been warned of potential disruption ahead, with delays on roads and railways. There have been traffic backlogs on major highways including the M25 circling London and near the M69 slip road on to the M1 in Leicestershire - while festive shoppers heading to the Bluewater store in Kent have been warned of delays due to a collision damaging barriers on the A2.
Meanwhile, an airport was forced to enact emergency procedures on Sunday after a plane's nose wheel collapsed as it landed in Belfast. There were four crew on board and no passengers when the 'hard landing' occurred - triggering emergency procedures at Belfast City Airport and forcing the runway to close for the rest of the day.
Heathrow Airport, on the outskirts of London, said about 100 flights were cancelled on Sunday and advised passengers to check with their airline before travelling. The AA predicted 21.3million drivers hit the road yesterday, after 22.7million were expected on Saturday - slightly fewer than the 23.7 million on Friday which was set to be the busiest day on the roads since the group's records began in 2010.
