Liverpool have reached the final of the Carabao Cup and some have predicted that Arne Slot’s side could do the unthinkable: win the quadruple. Following the 4-1 aggregate win over Tottenham, Liverpool are favourites to beat Newcastle at Wembley on March 16 and lift the first major trophy of the season. The Reds also have a great lead in the Premier League title race, topped the Champions League league phase and have a favourable draw in the next round of the FA Cup.

As such, there is belief that they could well win all four major trophies on offer in Slot’s debut season at Anfield. But is that actually possible?. No. While a few teams have won four or more pieces of silverware in a single season, a quadruple of major trophies is the hardest prize to achieve in club football – though it is by no means impossible. Liverpool came agonisingly close to it in 2021/22 as they won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup but missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City by one point and lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

Two English sides have completed the coveted continental treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, namely Manchester United (1998/99) and Manchester City (2022/23). Man City are also the only English club to have won a domestic treble – Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup – doing so in 2018/19. According to Betfair, Liverpool are favourites to win the Carabao Cup but face tough opposition in Newcastle who thrashed Arsenal 4-0 on aggregate in their semi-final tie.

The Reds are also odds on to pip the Gunners to the Premier League title as they currently hold a six point lead over their rivals having played a match less. That game in hand is fast approaching, with Liverpool taking on Everton in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday. Having topped the Champions League league phase with seven wins in eight games, Liverpool are narrow favourites for European football’s biggest trophy too.

Through to the last-16, they’ll face the winner of either Brest vs PSG or Monaco vs Benfica, with the knockout stage draw taking place on February 21. The FA Cup is the only competition Liverpool are not favourites to win, with Man City the current frontrunners though that could all change depending on this weekend’s results and draw. Slot’s side should progress to the fifth round with ease as they travel to bottom of the Championship Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.

Carabao Cup – 2/5. Premier League – 1/4. Champions League – 4/1. FA Cup – 4/1. Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup – 10/1. Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League – 22/1. Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League – 35/1 (was 400/1 at start of season). No trophies – 15/2. Odds courtesy of Betfair. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored the fourth goal against Tottenham on Thursday night but has dismissed all talk of an unprecedented quadruple.

‘The expectation that we have is to try and win every game and not quadruple or thinking about what could be there in May time,’ the Dutch defender told CBS. ‘Every game that we play from now on is going to be difficult up until the end of the season. ‘Hopefully we’re going to be in every competition and that’ll be fantastic that’s what we work for. We just have to enjoy the whole ride altogether.

‘Not only us as a group of players as a group with the defence as well, look at us ourselves, don’t look at others, just worry about ourselves and look that’s the only thing we look at. I say that to the team and to the boys as well.’. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
