Carabao Cup semi-finals to see major VAR change as Mikel Arteta makes feelings clear

In-stadium VAR announcements will be trialled in English football for the first time this week. Arsenal face Newcastle at the Emirates on Tuesday and their Carabao Cup semi-final clash could see referee John Brooks explain a decision to the crowd over the tannoy. The trial, which will also involve the other semi-final between Tottenham and Liverpool, is part of the PGMOL's broader commitment to transparency amid continued backlash to and confusion around the use of VAR.
Crowds inside the stadiums used and viewers watching at home would hear referees announce final decisions after they've been advised to consult the pitch-side monitor. They'll also speak following the conclusion of factual matters such as accidental handballs by a goalscorer and offside decisions.
Brooks has been put in charge of Arsenal's clash with Newcastle, so the Leicestershire-born referee could make history. It's a system which has been used abroad in leagues such as Major League Soccer in North America, the Primeira Liga in Portugal and most prominently during the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
On Monday, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was asked about the introduction of in-stadium announcements. "Any decision that brings clarity and communication," Arteta told a pre-match press conference. "It's helpful.". Newcastle boss Eddie Howe also told The Gazette: "It's interesting because the Brentford game in the last round, I enjoyed not having VAR in that moment because we scored goals and once you see the linesman's flag stay down you know it's a goal!.
