They sang about Henrik Larsson and Scott Sinclair, of Mikael Lustig and Jota. The deeds of countless other Celtic heroes of yesteryear were recalled and lauded for 90 minutes. The point made by the Green Brigade was as subtle as a brick flying through a window and was underscored by the exclusion, until the dying seconds, of any mention of Kieran Tierney.

If the song list of Celtic’s ultras was intended to demonstrate that the chanting of Tierney’s name against St Mirren was not intended as any slight on Greg Taylor, Brendan Rodgers will doubtless point out the difference between singing about players who have left the club and those who may well return.

In the end, any frostiness between the manager and a section of the fanbase in recent days does not look like developing into a schism. Managers who habitually win football matches can afford to dish out the odd lecture when matters are not quite to their liking. And, as long as Rodgers continues to do that at Celtic Park, dissenting voices will be few in number.

By the end of another routine victory, there was little for the Northern Irishman or his supporters to grumble about. Now 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership, thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate, a bleak start to the New Year at Ibrox has been put to bed with a pair of deserved wins.
