On a day when players and coaches from both sides of the Glasgow divide would have felt the burden of history on their shoulders, contrasting experiences from the recent past were to prove telling. Seeking to beat Celtic for the first time in six attempts, Philippe Clement presided over a Rangers performance which was brimming with heart and desire yet still lacking in some key respects.
Having seen his side score first against Celtic for the first time in seven matches and then bounce back from being 2-1 and 3-2 down, the Belgian had reasonable cause to believe this was finally going to be his day as extra-time began. You wonder, though, how many supporters stationed in the West Stand truly felt their favourites had it in them to score the golden goal which would spare them the agony of a penalty shoot-out?.
While the 90 minutes which they’d just witnessed were a distinct improvement on the abject no-show they saw at Parkhead in September, this was still a team short on know-how in terms of getting the job done and ensuring they would not again be rendered bystanders when the trophy was raised to the sky.
