Christine McGuinness has opened up about her mum Joanne's fight against breast cancer in a heartfelt interview. The telly star joined ITV's Lorraine on Wednesday (22 January) to discuss her stint on Celebrity Hunted for Stand Up to Cancer alongside Blue's Duncan James.
The 36-year-old shared details about her mum's condition following her diagnosis with aggressive HER2-positive breast cancer, which was discovered after finding a lump during the lockdown period. During the conversation with TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, Christine was asked about her mum's current state of health, to which she responded: "She's doing OK. She's still having treatment, and she still has all of her check-ups.".
Christine, a mum-of-three who co-parents with her former partner Paddy McGuinness, had previously spoken out about her mum's ordeal with cancer. Joanne underwent surgery to remove the lump, followed by half a year of chemotherapy and a series of radiotherapy sessions. In 2021, Christine joyfully announced that her mum was in remission, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The scare led Christine to get tested for the BRCA gene, especially since cancer had affected four of her aunties, raising her concerns. Fortunately, her results were negative. "I'm just really relieved. Thank God it came back negative," Christine expressed her relief to OK! magazine in 2021. "It doesn't mean I can't get cancer, but it means my chances are the same as anybody else's.".
