City that’s a ‘real bin’ named worst staycation spot in the UK

If you’re considering a family staycation in 2025, there’s one place you might want to think twice before booking, according to a new holiday index. Research by Go.Compare has named Newport in Wales as the ‘worst’ staycation spot in the country, with it garnering a score of just 1.4 out of 10.

The index ranked 55 destinations across the UK, with a focus on three key factors – family-friendly accommodation, attractions, and affordability during school breaks. The results highlight areas where families may face challenges when planning an enjoyable and cost-effective getaway.
Newport was identified as the lowest-ranking location with just 72 family-friendly hotels and 20 attractions tailored for children. Wales as a whole didn’t fare particularly well in the index, with Cardiff and Swansea also placing in the bottom five. This is partly due to families facing an average price hike in accommodation of 47% if they stay in Wales during school holidays compared to term time – the highest price hike in the UK.

It might not come as a surprise to some that Newport wasn’t higher up on the list, as many people aren’t particularly kind about the city online – including those who live there. On Reddit, a user known as u/Valkairn claimed the city centre has ‘little to recommend it, except for its small, recently renovated market’. They also said it had a ‘poor reputation for safety’.
